The New Bookstores
One of the luxuries of actually having a job is feeling less guilt buying the things you want instead of pining over them for hours before spending your last dollars on a prepackaged burrito from 7-Eleven. So it’s with great excitement that I’m looking forward to the amazing internet-discovered writing available to me.
- Coming & Crying - I already have a copy of this book, and still glad that it exists, and if I could go back and respend the money, I’d still buy it. If I had to choose between teenagers reading this or Twilight, I’d most definitely choose this. While Twilight is “romantic” and “promotes abstinence (Ed.’s note: Really?),” and is terribly written, C&C gives a much healthier and more realistic view of intimacy, sex, and how to put together healthy and sexy sentences.
- to slow down the time: stories - A couple weeks ago, Anaïs posted about getting a copy of Matthew Allard’s fantastic new book. I was intrigued. Then I start following lifeserial (Like Life cereal, but then like life, and how’s it’s serial! Are you keeping up?! Because it took me like two weeks to get that, no joke). Soon I discovered that not only was lifeserial the very same Matthew Allard, but that Matthew Allard was lifeserial, AND that his book featured awesome stories combined with awesome art, making it a must-have on any awesome bookshelf!
- Kevin Fanning books - I haven’t read any Kevin Fanning, but his titles are awesome, and who wouldn’t want a collection of stories centered around Jennifer Love Hewitt? That and How I Learned to Love You From So Far Away (Do you see what I’m talking about with the titles here?! Heartwrenching!) are must-haves based on all the great things I’ve heard from so many other places.
Supporting home-grown writers, internet-based or otherwise, is important. I look forward to buying Edan Lepucki’s new book too, If You’re Not Yet Like Me! It’s not only because these are all talented people who already intrigue me, but also because they are changing things. And by buying their books, YOU are changing things, and together we’re all changing things and proving that this stuff is still valuable, that voices are still needed!
So if you know about more of these projects, let them be known!
