Anonymous asked: I work a lot with advertisers. I can tell you that they will bow to any sort of pressure when it comes to REMOVING advertising from programming. If anyone complains about anything, they pull their advertisements. The complaints can be racist, prejudiced, close-minded, but on the flip side, I have seen it happen when the complaints are that the programming is racist, prejudiced, and close-minded. In fact, I have seen Lowe's pull for BOTH reasons in the last 3 mo. They only care about $$

Well, I mean yeah.  To the people who asked Lowe’s to pull the ads, the show itself is racist, prejudiced, and destroying America from within.  And Lowe’s has every right to spend their ads wherever.  And it’s ok that they only care about money.  That’s what corporations are for.

But let’s start from that point.  Lowe’s only cares about money.  Then the marketing and advertising budget is for getting people into Lowe’s.  Theoretically, advertising works and gets us to buy potato chips and cars and buzz saws, etc.  So the money that was supposed to go to All American Muslim is already spent, whether on TLC or not.  I think we can safely assume that any commercials for Lowe’s have the same general effectiveness, so Lowe’s pulling the ads there and putting them somewhere else is a wash.  They neither profit nor lose from the pull.

But on top of that, all the people who hear about this and think it is great will like Lowe’s more and some of them may deliberately shop at Lowe’s more often than they normally would.

But on top of THAT, there are all the people who hear about Lowe’s pulling their ads for something so ridiculous and obscene that they decide to NOT shop at Lowe’s.

The brand damage caused by them pulling their ads (especially as this becomes more widely known) is most certainly costing them money rather than making them money.

If they only care about money, we have a duty as consumers to care about more than money.
