Will Soderbergh ever make a good film again?
This is the question! I have faith in Soderbergh, mostly. But he has a weird track record.
Amazing:
- Out of Sight - The most romantic heist movie ever?
- Traffic - One of my all-time favorites
- Erin Brockovich - A movie that should be boring but isn’t at all. Also, Aaron Eckhart!
- The Informant! - Matt Damon is hilarious and delightful.
Not my taste:
- Sex, Lies, and Videotape - A movie for making you uncomfortable
- The Limey - Some people like this but I thought it was boring
- Full Frontal, Bubble, The Girlfriend Experience - Never saw them. Meh.
Weird:
- The Ocean’s movies - Yeah, they’re fun, but you can’t deny it’s a bunch of guys finding an excuse to go to Italy for months and goof off together.
- Contagion - Not a movie!
- The Informant! - Matt Damon is hilarious and delightful. Still weird.
I’m excited for Haywire, since I think Soderbergh is very talented and I REALLY like Ewan McGregor (If you ever want to absolutely love Ewan McGregor, watch his Long Way Round series). My hesitation is that the “deadly assassin girl” trope is feeling tired, what with Hanna, Colombiana, and now this. But we’ll see. We’ll see.
